June 28, 2025 - Elko, MN
By Jason D Searcy
An exciting Eve of Destruction took place on Saturday night at Elko Speedway even though summer storms threatened in other parts of the state.
The first NASCAR sanctioned Late Model feature had 14 cars entered. On lap three a handful of cars got together and slid up into the wall in corner number three. Justin Ziemiecki #J3, Billy Mohn #8, #50 Steve Anderson & #07 Dillon Sellner were all involved and sustained damage. Pole sitter #14 Grant Brown from Prior Lake (MN) held the lead the entire race and won by 1.36 seconds at the finish line. It was the second win of the season for Brown, the 2015 Power Stock Champion at ELKO. Michael Ostdiek #18 did a great job avoiding the wrecks and raced all the way up from his 13th starting position to finish second place. Chad Walen #52 was third, #99 Tommy Peterson fourth and #32 Jeremy Wolff fifth. Fast qualifier #3 Chris Marek scored a fast lap of 14.84 in time trials but spun in feature number one and finished 9th.
The second 25 lap main event for the Late Models had #8 Colin Stocker, who just recently finished 2nd place in the ELKO Drift Bash, took the lead from the start. On lap nine #3 Chris Marek from Elko (MN) passed Stocker on the high side, he then held on after a late race restart and won by 0.455 seconds, it was the second win of the season for 3-time Big 8 ELKO Champion Chris Marek. Stocker finished second place, defending Champion #19 Jake Ryan was third, #6 Owin Giles finished fourth by passing #52 Chad Walen on the last lap, Walen was fifth of the 13 cars who started the race.
Chris Marek now has a 13 point lead over Chad Walen in the race for the 2025 Late Model points title at Elko Speedway.
The Eternity Homes sponsored Thunder Cars raced two 20 lap feature events on Saturday night at Elko Speedway.
The first race went caution-free and #27 Gary West, in his first full year racing at Elko Speedway, led a majority of the race before being passed with three laps to go. West is a critically acclaimed Nashville recording artist who performed at the Grand Ole Opry for more than a decade and still performs traditional country music and resides in Elysian (MN). Five-time ELKO Thunder Car Champion #99 Brent Kane from Lonsdale (MN), started the race in 11th place and patiently picked his way to the front with numerous cars racing side by side. Kane finally passed West on the high side on lap 17 of 20 and Kane ended up winning by 0.733 seconds at the finish line, it was the second win of the season for Brent Kane at ELKO. West finished second, #16 Jimmy Omeara was third, #09 Matt Wiebusch fourth and #88 Jason Novak was fifth of the 17 cars participating in the race.
The second NASCAR sanctioned Thunder Car feature had #18 Eric Montour leading the first handful of laps until #29 Tommy Sorem from Northfield (MN) grabbed the lead on lap 5 of 20. Sorem was able to pass Montour on the low-side and then he held onto the top spot even after a restart on lap 13 bunched the field up. Sorem finished runner up in points in the Thunder Car division at ELKO in 2024 without a win, but that will not be the case this year, he won by 1.084 seconds, it was his first win of the season at Elko Speedway in 2025. Matt Frye #13 finished second, #20 Devin Schmidt was third, Eric Montour was fourth and #99 Brent Kane started 10th and finished fifth of the 16 cars racing. Taylor Goldman drove the Conrad Jorgenson car after having mechanical problems in the first event of the night.
Brent Kane now has a 26 point lead over Tommy Sorem in the race for the 2025 Thunder Car Championship at ELKO.
The NASCAR sanctioned Power Stocks raced two 20 lap feature events Saturday night during Eve of Destruction at Elko Speedway. The first race was a wild affair with Brock Westermayer #14 leading the initial lap until #77 Payton King took over on lap two, King then lost the lead to #24 Donovan Michaud on lap three before #3 Jimmie Jorgenson from Lakeville (MN) finally established himself as the leader on lap four. Jorgenson was able to hold onto the lead after battling with #08 Mike Stoer for numerous laps and won a drag race to the finish line by 0.294 seconds. It was the third win of the season for Jorgenson at ELKO. Mike Stoer finished second, #88 Nick Oxborough started 8th and finished third, #57 Jesse Fischer finished fourth and #24 Donovan Michaud was fifth of the 10 cars racing.
The second Power Stock feature of the night had #77 Payton King leading the first three laps until #57 Jesse Fischer grabbed the top spot. The race changed after a caution period at the half-way point, #08 Mike Stoer from Prior Lake (MN) took over the race after the restart and then held on to win by 0.892 seconds. Jimmie Jorgenson raced up from his 9th place starting position to finish second, #88 Nick Oxborough was third, Fischer dropped to fourth and teenager #16 Clayton Dorner finished fifth of the 10 cars participating.
Mike Stoer now has a slim 2 point lead over Jimmie Jorgenson in the race for the 2025 Power Stock title at Elko Speedway.
The INEX sanctioned Legends division at Elko Speedway had 16 cars racing a 20 lap feature event. 16 year old Ayrton Brockhouse #12 took the early lead and held the top spot until fast-timer #64 Tristan Swanson from Elko (MN) passed him while maneuvering through some lapped traffic on lap 6. Swanson was able to hold onto the lead as the top three cars pulled away from the rest of the field. Swanson won by 0.936 seconds, it was his second win of the season at ELKO. Brockhouse was able to hang onto second, finishing just 0.14 seconds ahead of 13 year old #22 Cam Panitzke who finished third. Jason Michaud #41 was fourth and #2 Rob Thurston finished fifth in this cautionless race.
Jason Michaud and #14 Ryan Johnson won the heat races.
Ayrton Brockhouse now leads Cam Panitzke by 20 points in the race for the 2025 Legends division title at Elko Speedway.
Fourteen INEX sanctioned Bandoleros raced a 12 lap “A” feature event at Elko Speedway on Saturday night. Mason Westphal #32 took over the lead on the lead lap until #5 Christopher Flynn grabbed the top spot on lap three. A couple yellow flags flew as the race progressed, Mason Westphal dropped out with mechanical problems mid-race as Flynn was leading the field. A late caution tightened the cars into a bunch for the finish. Roman Crow #27 from Plymouth (MN) got around Flynn while passing a lapped car with two laps to go. Chaos ensued on the last lap with cars scattered everywhere and Roman Crow crossing the finish line first. It was his first ever win at Elko Speedway. Markus Obermeyer #44 finished second place, #11 Adiana Hawes was third, #99 Jamie Dougherty was fourth and #56 George Brochman fifth.
Christopher Flynn and Roman Crow won the heat races, Anna Athman #2 from Olivia (MN) was the winner of the beginner Bando 6 lap feature event.
Christopher Flynn now has a slim 4 point lead over Mason Westphal in the race for the 2025 Bando point title at ELKO.
